The Robert Anchipolovsky Quartet presents a special program dedicated to two of the greatest titans of the tenor saxophone in jazz history—Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon. These are more than just legendary names; they are the very cornerstones upon which the musical language of modern jazz was built.
Sonny Rollins – A philosopher of improvisation and an architect of musical form, Rollins treated every stage appearance as a continuous creative journey. His boundless freedom, rhythmic imagination, and ability to transform a simple melody into a sweeping musical statement forever expanded the possibilities of the saxophone.
Dexter Gordon – The embodiment of swing and sophistication, Gordon possessed a singular tone and a “speaking” style of phrasing. His music is steeped in bluesy depth, warmth, and drama, and his stage presence became a benchmark for the art of jazz. As a central voice of Bebop and Hard Bop, he combined virtuosity with a rare, profound humanity.
In this project, the Robert Anchipolovsky Quartet does more than merely perform the masters’ repertoire; they engage in a living musical dialogue with their legacy. The program features masterpieces synonymous with Rollins and Gordon, alongside original interpretations where respect for tradition meets a personal, contemporary voice.
