Finally – The Sonata! In the 17th century, the instrumental sonata became a central musical form, granting instruments their “independence”: for the first time, they took center stage without vocals or text, serving as a medium for creative expression full of emotion and imagination. In Italy and Germany during this period, there was a flourishing of pure instrumental music—sometimes solo, sometimes in a dialogue between instruments—characterized by formal freedom and continuous refinement of musical expression. In this program, Ensemble Mezzo unfolds the birth of one of the most important genres in Western music through chamber sonatas for one to four voices, accompanied by a continuo group.

The ensemble will perform works by some of the foremost architects of the early instrumental sonata: Schmelzer, Rosenmüller, and Biber from the German tradition, alongside Castello, Fontana, and Bartoli from the Italian tradition—each creating a unique, bold, and colorful instrumental language. The ensemble is led by the internationally renowned Baroque violinist Kati Debretzeni—one of the world’s leading performers in this field—alongside other prominent musicians from Israel and abroad.
