Ashley Solomon, Traverso
Jochewed Schwarz, Harpsichord

This program explores the remarkable genius of J. S. Bach alongside four of his exceptionally gifted sons, all of whom — like their father — composed works for flute and harpsichord.
Each family member developed a distinct musical voice, and this performance offers a journey through their individual styles and expressive worlds.

Program:

J.S. Bach – Sonata in G Minor, BWV 1020

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach – Sonata in E Minor for flute and continuo

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach – Sonata in B-flat Major, H. 578 (Wq. 161/2)

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach – Sonata in D Major

Johann Christian Bach – Sonata for harpsichord solo in B-flat Major, Op. 17, No. 5

Ashley Solomon enjoys a successful career as a soloist, chamber musician, and guest conductor in the UK, across Europe, and in North and South America, the Far East, and Australia. He is the Artistic Director of the baroque ensemble Florilegium, which he co-founded in 1991, and with which he has recorded nearly forty albums—many award-winning. Ashley combines performance and scholarship, serving as Head of Historical Performance at the Royal College of Music in London. In 2014 he was awarded a Personal Chair (Professor), and he is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (2017) and of the Royal College of Music (2019).

Jochewed Schwarz performs on historical keyboards – harpsichord, clavichord, and fortepiano – in Israel and in Europe as a soloist, chamber musician, and continuo player. She performs in DuoChord, her harpsichord duo with Emer Buckley (founded 2011), and appears regularly in recital series and chamber festivals. Jochewed is currently completing a study of harpsichord playing in British Mandate Palestine with a focus on Frank Pelleg, and is promoting new editions of neglected works by the Israeli cellist-composer Joachim Stutschewsky.

Ashley and Jochewed share an appreciation of historical instruments, a commitment to understanding the music and its cultural context, and a desire to bring long-forgotten repertoire to today’s audiences. Their two-CD album of flute and keyboard sonatas by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was released in October 2024 by Meridian Records (UK).
