A unique concert where the soloists are the orchestra and the orchestra are the soloists—a sort of “musical chairs” where a different player takes the lead in each concerto.
The word “Concerto” comes from the Italian “concertare,” meaning to cooperate or to compete. In this performance, we certainly intend to cooperate!
The program features a selection of virtuosic Baroque concerti performed on period instruments. We begin with the early form of the genre from the mid-17th century: the Concerto Grosso by Willem de Fesch, a Dutch composer who wrote in the Italian style while working in London.
We then move into the early 18th century with a celebration of solo and duo concerti by Vivaldi (Cello Concerto in A Minor; Concerto for Two Cellos in G Minor), Tartini (Violin Concerto in E Minor), and Telemann (Viola Concerto in G Major).
We conclude the evening with a “mad” masterpiece—Geminiani’s “La Folia” (The Madness). Written in 1726 as an orchestral arrangement of a violin sonata by his revered teacher, Corelli, the “La Folia” motif is an ancient melodic theme originating from a wild 15th-century folk dance. Geminiani’s version remains one of the most brilliant examples of the Italian Concerto Grosso in all its glory.
This concert is performed by a group of leading specialists bringing a fresh spirit to these Baroque staples. The evening is under the artistic direction of Renana Levin, a 17-year-old cellist who has already established a professional career as a soloist and chamber musician with Israel’s leading ensembles.
