French works in the late 17th Century Italian style by Marc-Antoine Charpentier
(1643-1704) and François Couperin (1668-1733)

Perhaps it’s a cliche to say that “love conquers all,” but it’s a value worth believing in.

Charpentier, who is today recognized as one of France’s most iconic composers, was seen by his contemporaries as a dangerous agent of Italian culture. Though Charpentier advocated for balance and unity between the Italian and French styles, he did provoke the French conservative audience through his two miniature pastoral operas, which we will perform in the concert.

And when it comes to national pride, even love can’t forgive everything!
