The concert will feature arias, sonatas, and chamber concertos by Antonio Vivaldi.
In the 18th century, Venice enjoyed a vibrant and rich musical life. Concerts were held in every church, and several opera houses regularly hosted performances. Vivaldi composed music and conducted an orchestra at a school for orphaned girls, who grew into skilled musicians and renowned singers. This orchestra, and Vivaldi himself, received rave reviews throughout Europe. His uniqueness, emotionality, and, most importantly, extraordinary virtuosity astounded listeners. Vivaldi’s new violin techniques delighted his contemporaries. The expressiveness of his music delighted audiences. Only the most skilled and renowned singers could perform Vivaldi’s arias in opera houses.
The chamber concertos included in our program were written by the composer for students at the Ospedae della Pietà school. They are performed less frequently than the concertos of the Four Seasons cycle, but they are no less vibrant or varied. Vivaldi, a virtuoso violinist and inventive composer who wrote over 500 instrumental concertos, also wrote nearly 100 operas and 50 cantatas. The vocal arias in these cantatas are as heartfelt and passionate as those in the instrumental concertos. You can listen to Vivaldi’s music for hours without ever tiring, even without performing the famous Four Seasons.
