Folk songs and popular melodies originate outside the concert hall. Passed down from one generation to the next, they change and evolve over time. Throughout history, composers have repeatedly turned to these melodies for inspiration, recognizing in them expressions of national identity and shared memory. They have arranged and reimagined them, bringing music from the streets, homes, and communities into written scores and onto the concert stage.
The program traces the evolution of familiar melodies across different periods and cultures: a Spanish romance found in the work of Renaissance composer Alonso Mudarra and in the Ladino tradition, reinterpreted by composer Yonatan Keren (Israel–Switzerland); Scottish and Irish songs arranged by Beethoven; the Beatles’ Yesterday in an arrangement by Luciano Berio; Bach chorales based on a folk song, as well as a sonata by Bach.
Alongside these works, the ensemble will perform folk songs, dances, and traditional melodies that have been reinterpreted throughout history.
