During the twentieth century, it was declared more than once that the tonal language, which had dominated Western art music for over 200 years, had run its course. And yet, certain composers continued to write tonal music—sometimes as an overt imitation, sometimes as an invention of a past that never existed, and sometimes simply because they felt it was their native language. The result is a body of works that seem as though they were written at the wrong time. But are these truly “anachronisms,” or has the evolution of Western musical language never moved in a straight line?
