Pianist Tal Walker presents his new album, Clair-Obscur, bringing together works by Gabriel Fauré and Lili Boulanger. The term clair-obscur (French for chiaroscuro, or the interplay of light and shadow) is often used to describe Fauré’s music, but it is equally fitting for Boulanger’s, where the inspiration and vitality of a young and promising composer intertwine with the melancholy and tragedy of her short life. Through the two composers’ short piano pieces and works in theme-and-variations form, Walker explores subtle harmonic gradations and the full spectrum of emotional expression. The album has received critical acclaim in the international press, including BBC Music Magazine and Belgium’s De Standaard. This launch concert invites the audience on an intimate musical journey, placing the luminous and the dark in constant dialogue: one could not exist without the other.
